Best Beaches and Day Trips from Freetown Sierra Leone 2026
Complete guide to the best day trips from Freetown. River No 2 Beach, Tokeh, Bureh, Tacugama chimps and Banana Islands. Directions, costs and what to expect.
Day Trips from Freetown
Freetown's location on the Sierra Leone Peninsula — surrounded by forest, Atlantic beaches, and estuary — makes it an excellent base. Within 1-2 hours of the city centre, you can reach some of West Africa's finest beaches, habituated chimpanzees in forest settings, and historical fishing villages. These are the best day trip options in 2026.
River No. 2 Beach (40 km, ~90 min)
Sierra Leone's most famous and photographed beach. A wide arc of white sand with a palm-fringed river mouth at one end, community-managed with a conservation entry fee (NLe 10,000-20,000). Beach bar with cold drinks and food, canoe trips up the river, hammocks. Best on weekdays — quieter and more peaceful than the weekend family crowds. The definitive Sierra Leone beach experience.
Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary (22 km, ~45 min)
Rehabilitation centre for rescued chimpanzees in the Western Area Peninsula Forest Reserve. Guided tours daily 9am-4pm. USD 15-20 per person. Getting close to habituated chimp groups is an extraordinary experience. Last entry 2pm — allow 2 hours minimum.
Tokeh Beach (50 km, ~2 hours)
A kilometre-long arc of white sand on the Peninsula's southwestern coast. Small resort, beach bars, good swimming in calm conditions. More infrastructure than River No. 2 but never crowded by global standards. Combine with Kent Beach for a longer day.
Bureh Beach (55 km, ~2.5 hours)
Sierra Leone's premier surf break — also a beautiful, tranquil beach even when the surf is small. A small expat and surfer community gives Bureh a special authentic atmosphere. Late afternoon bonfire culture on weekends is a Freetown expat institution worth experiencing.
Banana Islands (boat from southern Peninsula)
Three small islands accessible by boat from the southern Peninsula — pristine beaches, snorkelling on coral reefs, and significant historical weight as a former slave trade waypoint. Overnight accommodation on Dublin Island. A slightly more logistically involved excursion but genuinely worthwhile for the experience.
Transport tip: Hire a private car with driver (USD 60-80/full day) for beach day trips. Poda-poda buses reach some destinations but add unpredictability. Globe2Me can arrange reliable transport.
