Freetown Peninsula Road Trip Complete Guide 2026
One of West Africa's best coastal drives. Complete self-drive guide to the Freetown Peninsula — beaches, villages, stops and tips from Lumley to Bureh Beach.
The Freetown Peninsula Drive
The Sierra Leone Peninsula — a 40 km volcanic ridge dropping steeply to the Atlantic — offers one of West Africa's genuinely exceptional coastal drives. The road connecting Freetown to Bureh Beach passes through forest, fishing villages, and a succession of pristine beaches. With a vehicle and a day, this journey delivers more concentrated beauty than almost any comparable distance on the continent.
The Route: Freetown to Bureh Beach
Freetown (start): Breakfast in Aberdeen. Fill up with fuel — stations become unreliable south of Freetown. Download offline maps.
Lakka Beach (17 km, ~30 min): First beach stop. Sandy, local character, beach bars. Quick swim before continuing.
Tacugama turn-off (22 km from centre): Detour to the chimpanzee sanctuary (2 hours). Worth it.
River No. 2 Beach (40 km, ~90 min): The postcard beach. Lunch at the community beach bar — fresh fish, jollof, cold drinks. Allow 2-3 hours here.
Tokeh Beach (50 km, ~2 hrs): Long arc of white sand. Swim if conditions allow.
Bureh Beach (55 km, ~2.5 hrs): Arrive for late afternoon surf or sunset. The small expat-surfer community gives Bureh a special, authentic atmosphere.
4WD recommended — the road south of Tokeh becomes rough. Start early (7-8am departure) to complete the full route and return before dark. No ATMs south of Freetown — bring all the cash you'll need. Globe2Me can arrange private vehicle with driver: USD 70-100 for the full day.
