First Trip to Sierra Leone in 2026: Crossings, Beaches and Practical Planning

Sierra Leone sees a fraction of the visitors its neighbours get, and the beaches show it. What puts people off is not danger — it is not knowing how a trip there fits together. Here is the practical version.

You notice the quiet on the peninsula beaches — Bureh, River No. 2, Tokeh — which stay near-empty for most of the year. You notice it at Tiwai Island, where the chimpanzees comfortably outnumber the tourists. For a certain kind of traveller, that is the entire appeal. The barrier to a first trip is logistics, and almost all of it can be sorted before you fly.

Getting in from Lungi

Lungi International Airport (FNA) sits across the Sierra Leone River estuary from Freetown. There is no bridge. Every international arrival crosses the water, and that crossing is the first thing to plan.

Ferry

Around 45 to 90 minutes across the water depending on the vessel, very cheap, and a genuinely good introduction to the country. It runs roughly 6am to 6pm at irregular intervals, with no night service, and weather or mechanical cancellations are common. Confirm the schedule for your travel date and never make the last ferry your only plan.

Licensed water taxi

Faster — 15 to 30 minutes — and more comfortable than the ferry, at a higher price. Multiple private operators run from the Lungi jetty to Aberdeen and Government Wharf in Freetown, mostly in daylight hours. Book ahead; seats are limited and popular arrival times fill up.

Road via Port Loko

The long way around the estuary by car takes several hours. It is mainly a fallback for when the water crossings are not running, for example during the heavy rains.

Where a first trip usually goes

Most first trips are built around Freetown and the peninsula, with one or two bigger excursions.

• The peninsula beaches. River No. 2 is community-run and one of the nicer beaches in West Africa. Tokeh and Bureh are close by; Bureh has a small surf scene.
• The Banana Islands. A short boat ride off the tip of the peninsula — quiet, good for snorkelling, with a couple of simple guesthouses if you want to stay over.
• Tiwai Island. An inland river-island wildlife sanctuary in the south-east, known for chimpanzees and around eleven primate species. It takes planning to reach and rewards the effort.
• Bunce Island. A former slave-trading fort in the estuary, reachable by boat from Freetown. Sobering and historically important.

Visas, timing and health

• Visa. Most nationalities need one. Sierra Leone runs an e-visa system — apply well before travel and carry printed confirmation.
• When to go. The dry season, roughly November to April, is the straightforward choice for beaches and road travel. The rains, May to October, are heavy and can suspend boat crossings.
• Health. Yellow fever vaccination is required for entry and checked on arrival. Take malaria prophylaxis. Carry clean US dollars in small denominations and pick up a local SIM at the airport.

Is it safe?

Sierra Leone has been stable since the civil war ended in 2002. Freetown and the main visitor areas are considered safe for travellers who take normal precautions — do not display valuables, use arranged transport after dark, and keep an eye on the weather if you are relying on boats. The recurring problem for visitors is logistics, not security.
