Wildlife Sierra Leone 2026 Chimps Pygmy Hippos and National Parks
Complete guide to Sierra Leone wildlife. Tacugama chimpanzee sanctuary, Tiwai Island pygmy hippo, Gola Rainforest, Outamba-Kilimi National Park and birdwatching guide.
Sierra Leone's Wildlife Heritage
Sierra Leone lies within the Upper Guinea Forest — a globally recognised biodiversity hotspot with extraordinary endemism. Decades of limited tourism have left ecosystems remarkably intact by West African standards. For wildlife travellers, this is a genuine frontier: habituated chimpanzees, one of the world's last viable pygmy hippopotamus populations, forest elephants, and over 630 bird species including rare Upper Guinea endemics.
Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary (22 km from Freetown)
The most accessible wildlife encounter. In the Western Area Peninsula Forest Reserve, Tacugama rehabilitates rescued chimpanzees. Guided tours get visitors close to habituated groups — some living here for decades.
- Open daily 9am-4pm (last entry 2pm)
- Entry: USD 15-20
- Allow minimum 2 hours
- Café on site; book weekends in advance
Tiwai Island Wildlife Sanctuary (southern Sierra Leone)
A 12 km² island in the Moa River hosting 11 primate species. Home to the critically endangered pygmy hippopotamus — only approximately 2,000-2,500 individuals remain globally. Night walks with trained rangers offer the best chance of pygmy hippo encounters. Birdwatching here is exceptional: 135+ species in a small area.
- Location: ~5-6 hours from Freetown by road
- Accommodation: Eco-lodge on the island — book ahead
- Best activities: Night walks, boat trips, dawn birdwatching
Gola Rainforest National Park (southeast, near Liberian border)
71,000 hectares of intact Upper Guinea Forest managed through a RSPB-Sierra Leone government partnership. Home to western chimpanzees (partially habituated groups), forest elephants, Diana monkey, olive colobus, and the White-necked Rockfowl (Picathartes) — one of Africa's most sought birdwatching species. World-class birdwatching: 330+ species recorded including 15 Upper Guinea endemics.
- Distance: ~340 km from Freetown, 6-8 hours by 4WD
- Best season: November-April for road access
- Accommodation: Basic eco-lodge at park entry points
- Guides: Mandatory; local guides have exceptional knowledge
Outamba-Kilimi National Park (northern Sierra Leone)
Sierra Leone's only formal national park. 1,083 km² of savannah, gallery forest, and river habitat. West African chimpanzees, forest elephants, hippos, leopards, and 200+ bird species. Minimal infrastructure — genuine wilderness. 4WD essential, best November-April.
Planning tip: Tiwai and Outamba-Kilimi require dedicated multi-day itineraries. Tacugama is an easy half-day from Freetown. Globe2Me can arrange transport and accommodation for all wildlife destinations — contact us for current logistics and availability.
