Surfing in Sierra Leone 2026 Bureh Beach and West Africa Waves
Complete surf guide for Sierra Leone 2026. Bureh Beach breaks, River No 2 sandbar, season, water temperature, logistics and why Sierra Leone rivals any surf destination in Africa.
Sierra Leone: Africa's Best Kept Surf Secret
While the surfing world battles for spots at crowded breaks in Morocco, Portugal, and South Africa, Sierra Leone produces consistent, excellent Atlantic swells on pristine white-sand beaches with essentially zero crowds. The quality at Bureh Beach is genuinely world-class. Infrastructure is minimal. That's the point.
Bureh Beach — The Premier Break
55 km south of Freetown on the Western Area Peninsula, Bureh is Sierra Leone's most consistent and celebrated surf spot. The main wave is a right-hander over a sandy bottom — peeling with power and shape when conditions align. A small surf camp and expat community has established itself here; bonfire evenings on weekends have become a Freetown institution.
- Swell direction: SSW to SW
- Best season: November-March (dry season, offshore Harmattan winds, consistent swell)
- Water temperature: 26-30°C year round — no wetsuit needed
- Level: Intermediate to advanced on good days; manageable for experienced beginners on smaller days
River No. 2 Beach
The river mouth sandbar produces fun beach break when the swell is working. More popular with swimmers and day-trippers than surfers — check conditions before committing. Inconsistent but excellent when running.
Tokeh Beach
Long sandy beach break more suitable for beginners and longboarders. Sheltered from larger swells — a good alternative when Bureh is too big. The beach is beautiful regardless of wave conditions.
Bring everything — reliable surf equipment rental is essentially nonexistent in Sierra Leone. An all-round 7'0" or mid-length suits the varied conditions well. Tropical wax. Leash. Rash vest for sun protection. Surfboards as airline oversize sporting equipment — most carriers allow them for a fee.
Getting to Bureh from Lungi
Ferry from Lungi to Freetown (30-90 min), then private hire car south through Freetown and down the Peninsula (1.5-2 hours). 4WD recommended in any wet weather. Practical approach: stay at Hariom Yogi Guest House opposite Lungi Airport, cross to Freetown fresh in the morning, drive to Bureh for dawn patrol.
Local Surf Community
A small group of young Sierra Leonean surfers is developing rapidly around Bureh. Respectful engagement — sharing waves, positive interaction — builds the local goodwill that opens knowledge and access. Don't be the tourist who drops in and dominates.
