What's Actually Worth Doing

🏖️ Lumley Beach
Beaches

Freetown's main beach strip — 4km of Atlantic coastline with beach bars, restaurants and weekend football. On weekend evenings, Lumley transforms into the social heart of the city. The beach itself is wide and uncrowded compared to West African equivalents.

Local tip: Go late afternoon. The light is extraordinary and the beach is cooler. Avoid Sundays for a quieter experience.
🌿 Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary
Wildlife

One of West Africa's most important wildlife sanctuaries, 22km from Freetown in the Western Area National Park. Home to over 100 rescued chimpanzees. The tour is genuinely impressive — primates in semi-wild forest habitat, with knowledgeable guides and a conservation story that matters.

Getting there: Take a taxi from Freetown (~45 min). Book in advance — visitor numbers are managed. Globe2Me can arrange transport.
🌊 River No. 2 Beach
Day Trip

The most photographed beach in Sierra Leone — and justifiably so. A natural tidal lagoon where a river meets the Atlantic, backed by palm forest. Located 25km south of Freetown. The water is calm inside the lagoon, making it ideal for swimming. One of West Africa's genuinely beautiful beaches.

Best time: Dry season (November–April). Bring your own food and drinks — facilities are basic but the location is exceptional.
🏛️ Cotton Tree & Old Freetown
History

The Cotton Tree at the centre of Freetown is one of West Africa's most significant historical symbols — a living monument to the arrival of freed slaves who founded the city in 1792. The surrounding area includes St. George's Cathedral, the old colonial court buildings and the National Museum.

Walk the history: The Old Freetown walking tour (ask us to arrange) covers 8 sites in 2 hours — genuinely surprising history for most visitors.
⛰️ Leicester Peak Hike
Outdoors

Freetown sits on the edge of the Western Area Peninsula National Park — one of the last remaining primary rainforests in West Africa. The Leicester Peak trail takes 2–3 hours return from the trailhead, rewarding hikers with panoramic views over Freetown and the Atlantic. Wildlife including hornbills and colobus monkeys along the route.

Hire a guide: The trails are unmarked. A local guide makes it safe and dramatically more interesting. Ask us to arrange one.
🍽️ Aberdeen Fish Market & Food
Food

Aberdeen — Freetown's beach peninsula — hosts both the city's best casual seafood and its highest concentration of restaurants. The morning fish market is a sensory experience worth setting an early alarm for. For dinner, the beachfront strip offers fresh barracuda, snapper and lobster at prices that will surprise Western visitors.

Ask locals: The best spots change season to season. WhatsApp us for a current recommendation when you arrive.
