Best Restaurants in Freetown Sierra Leone 2026 Where to Eat
Guide to the best places to eat in Freetown Sierra Leone 2026. Local Sierra Leonean cookshops, international options, Aberdeen beach bars, street food and vegetarian choices.
Eating Well in Freetown
Freetown's restaurant scene has grown significantly, driven by the NGO community, diaspora returnees, and a growing local middle class. From excellent local Sierra Leonean cookshops to Lebanese, Indian, and continental dining, you can eat genuinely well here. The Aberdeen and Lumley areas have the highest concentration of options.
Local Sierra Leonean Food
The best local food is in small cookshops — not tourist-facing establishments. Look for busy local spots with fresh daily cooking. A full meal of rice and stew costs NLe 20,000-50,000 (USD 1-2.50) at a cookshop. Must-order dishes: groundnut soup with rice, cassava leaf plasas, pepper soup, fried plantain, jollof rice.
Aberdeen Beach Area
The highest concentration of expat-facing dining. Beach shacks serving grilled Atlantic fish and cold Star Beer — excellent and affordable. Multiple international options (Lebanese mezze, Indian curries, continental) within a few blocks of each other. The Aberdeen night market on Friday and Saturday evenings is particularly worth visiting.
Lumley Area
Several good mid-range restaurants in the residential neighbourhood. The Lumley Beach esplanade has informal beach bars serving local food and drinks at sunset — a Freetown institution for residents and visitors alike.
International Options
- Lebanese: Well-established Lebanese community has created several good restaurants — mezze, grills, fresh bread. Popular with expats and UN staff.
- Indian: A small number of Indian restaurants, primarily in Aberdeen. Quality varies — ask your hotel for current recommendations.
- Chinese: Chinese business community restaurants useful for group dining.
Vegetarian visitors: Freetown is manageable but not easy for strict vegetarians. Sierra Leonean stews often contain fish or meat. Best options: Lebanese mezze, rice and beans, fried plantain, akara (check preparation). Hariom Yogi Guest House in Lungi (opposite the airport) is notable as one of the only full vegetarian restaurant options in the wider airport area — serving Indian vegetarian cuisine with advance notice.
