Sierra Leone Seasons Dry Season vs Rainy Season When to Visit

Detailed comparison of Sierra Leone seasons for 2026 travellers. What each season means for beaches, roads, prices, wildlife and the overall travel experience.

Two Very Different Sierras

Sierra Leone's tropical climate divides sharply into two seasons: the dry season (November-April) and the rainy season (May-October). These are not minor variations in weather — they produce two genuinely different countries. Roads, beach conditions, accommodation prices, wildlife accessibility, and daily comfort all change dramatically between seasons. Choosing when to go is one of the most important trip planning decisions.

Dry Season (November-April) — The Classic Choice

The Harmattan wind from the Sahara brings cool, dry air. Temperatures 22-34°C. Humidity drops. Roads dry out. Beaches are at their finest. Wildlife viewing is best as animals concentrate near water sources.

Drawbacks: Higher prices in peak season (December-January). Harmattan haze reduces visibility January-February. Slightly more tourists (though still minimal by global standards).

Rainy Season (May-October) — The Road Less Travelled

Up to 5,000mm of annual rainfall, concentrated July-September. The landscape transforms into vivid emerald. Rivers run full. Waterfalls appear. Prices drop 30-50%.

Globe2Me recommendation: For first-time visitors, January-March is the ideal window. Dry season but post-peak December. For budget travellers, May or October (the shoulders of the rainy season) offer excellent value with manageable conditions.
