Leone Converter: Daily Rates and Old-to-New Leone Explained
Globe2Me now has a free leone converter with daily mid-market rates for 12 currencies, plus a tool for the old-to-new leone question that still confuses visitors and the diaspora.
Old leone, new leone
Sierra Leone redenominated its currency in 2022. One new leone (NLe, also written SLE) equals 1,000 old leones (SLL). If you see a price like 24,000 on an old note or an older website, it is NLe 24 in today's money. Our old-to-new leone converter does the maths for you. For the current legal status of old notes, check the Bank of Sierra Leone.
What is on the converter
- A leone rates hub with pair pages such as USD to SLE and SLE to GBP, across 12 currencies.
- A free embeddable widget you can add to your own site.
- A simple JSON feed of the rates for developers.
- A rate history chart. We started recording on 20 October 2026, and the chart appears once there are three days of data.
Daily, not live
Rates are mid-market and updated once a day, so we call them daily rates, never live. The rates come from exchangerate-api.com, which we credit on every page. A mid-market rate is the wholesale midpoint. What a bank, exchange bureau or transfer service offers you will be different, so ask for the leones you will actually receive.

Use the true-cost checker to compare quotes against the daily rate, and read how the true cost adds up.
